State Legislature
REPUBLICAN TRIFECTA There are 105 seats in the House (73% R) and 35 in the Senate (77% R). Both House and Senate members serve 4-year terms with no term limits. Elections occur every 4 years in even (midterm election) years with all of the House and Senate seats up.
State Legislative Term
January 11, 2022 - April 25, 2022. Session limited to 30 legislative days in 105 calendar days.
State Elected Officials
The Governor (R), SOS (R) and AG (R) are elected for 4-year terms in midterm elections and are limited to 2 consecutive terms. The next election is in 2022.
State Supreme Court
There are 9 judges, selected in partisan elections for 6-year terms and face re-election to serve again. All justices are Republicans. 2 were initially appointed by a Republican governor but since were elected. Vacancies are appointed by the governor who then must stand for election in the next general election occurring at least one year after taking election.
US Representatives & Senators
Senate seats (R) are up in 2022 and 2026. House seats (6R, 1D) are up in even years.
Redistricting Method/Info
Both congressional and state legislative district lines are drawn by the state legislature. Both chambers of the state legislature must approve a single redistricting plan. State legislative district lines must be approved in the first legislative session following the United States Census. There is no statutory deadline for congressional redistricting. The governor may veto the lines drawn by the state legislature. There are 7 congressional, 35 state senate and 105 state house districts.
