DEMOCRATIC TRIFECTA There are 65 seats in the House (63% D) and 35 in the Senate (57% D). House members serve 2-year terms and Senators 4-year terms, both limited to 8 years. Elections occur in even years with all House seats and 1/2 of the Senate seats up every 2 years. The legislative session is 120 days.

State Elected Officials
The Governor (D), SOS (D) and the AG (D) are elected for 4-year terms in midterm elections, limited to 2 consecutive terms. The next election is in 2022.
State Supreme Court
There are 7 judges, appointed by the governor with the assistance of a commission of 15 members. Non-lawyer members are appointed by the governor and lawyers are appointed by the governor, AG and Chief Justice, who recommend 3 nominees for the governor. Initial terms last at least 2 years, after which justices must stand for retention in a yes-no election. Subsequent terms last 10 years. All current 7 judges have been appointed by Democratic governors. Vacancies are filled as the seat normally would be at the end of a term.
US Representatives & Senators
Senate seats (D) are up in 2022 and in 2026. House seats (currently 3R, 4D) are up in even years. Colorado was apportioned an 8th seat in the US House after the 2020 census.
Redistricting Method/Info
Congressional and state legislative district lines are drawn by separate non-politician commissions. Each commission consists of 4 members from the states largest political party, 4 from the 2nd largest and 4 non-affiliated. Members are appointed by a panel of 3 judges selected by the Chief Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court. At least 8 members, including 2 non-affiliated, must approve a map. There are currently 7 congressional districts (8 with the new proposed map), 35 state senate districts and 65 state house districts.
