State Legislature
REPUBLICAN TRIFECTA There are 180 seats in the House (57% R) and 56 in the Senate (61% R). Both House and Senate members serve 2-year terms with no term limits. Elections occur every 2 years in even years with all of the House and Senate seats up.
State Legislative Term
January 10, 2022 - March 31, 2022. Session limited to 40 legislative days.
State Elected Officials
The Governor (R), SOS (R) and AG (R) are elected for 4-year terms in midterm elections. The Governor is limited to two consecutive terms and the SOS and AG have no term limits. The next election is in 2022.
State Supreme Court
There are 9 judges, chosen in nonpartisan elections to 6-year terms, after which they must run for re-election to retain their seats. 8 of the judges were initially appointed by Republican governors. Vacancies are filled by an appointment by the governor from a list of 5 candidates put forward by a commission. The commission consists of 18 members appointed by the governor. The governor may choose someone not on the list.
US Representatives & Senators
Senate seats (D) are up in 2022 and 2026. House seats (8R and 6D) are up in even years.
Redistricting Method/Info
Both congressional and state legislative district lines are drawn by the state legislature. A simple majority in each chamber is required and the governor may veto. There are 14 congressional, 56 state senate and 180 state house districts.
