State Legislature
DIVIDED - REPUBLICAN LEGISLATURE There are 105 seats in the House (65% R) and 39 seats in the Senate (67% R). Both House and Senate members serve 4-year terms, limited to 3 terms. Elections occur in odd years with all House and Senate seats up every 4 years (in odd years prior to presidential election years).
State Legislative Term
March 14, 2022 - June 6, 2022. Session limited to 45 legislative days in 60 calendar days in odd years and 60 legislative days in 85 calendar days in even.
State Elected Officials
The Governor (D), SOS (R) and AG (R) are elected for 4-year terms in odd years. The Governor is limited to 2 consecutive terms and the SOS and AG have no term limits. The next election is in 2023.
State Supreme Court
There are 7 judges, elected to 10-year terms through partisan elections to represent specific districts and are voted into office by the residents of their respective regions. Judges must face re-election if they wish to serve again. There are 2 Democrats and 5 Republicans currently on the bench. Vacancies are temporarily filled by the remaining members until a special election is called by the governor.
US Representatives & Senators
Senate seats (R) are up in 2022 and 2026. House seats (5R, 1D) are up in even years.
Redistricting Method/Info
Congressional and state legislative district lines are drawn by the state legislature. These lines are subject to veto by the governor. In the event that the legislature is unable to approve state legislative district boundaries, the state supreme court must draw the lines. There are 6 congressional districts, 39 state senate and 105 state house districts.
