Redistricting Method/Info
Congressional and state legislative district lines are drawn by the state legislature. An 15 member advisory commission is formed where the majority and minority leaders of the state senate each pick 2 and of the state house, 3; the chairs of the Dem and Rep parties each pick one, the above 12 members appoint 2 more from the public split along party lines and the 2 public members appoint one more. The state legislature is not bound by the commission but if the legislature is unable to pass a plan, the responsibility falls to the Maine Supreme Court. A two-thirds majority is required to approve new district maps, which are subject to veto by the governor. New maps were enacted on 9/29/21, approved unanimously by the legislature and governor. There are 2 congressional districts, 35 state senate and 151 state house districts.
