State Legislature
REPUBLICAN TRIFECTA There are 100 seats in the House (67% R) and 50 in the Senate (62% R). House members serve 2-year terms, limited to 4 terms and Senators serve 4-year terms, limited to 2 terms. Elections occur even years with all House seats and 1/2 of the Senate seats up every 2 years.
State Legislative Term
No regular legislative session in even years. Sessions are limited to 90 legislative days in 2 years.
State Elected Officials
The Governor (R), SOS (R) and AG (R) are elected for 4-year terms in presidential election (leap) years, limited to two terms in any 16 year span. The next election is in 2024.
State Supreme Court
There are 7 judges, selected in nonpartisan elections to 8-year terms. Thereafter, they must run for re-election/retention. 4 judges were elected in nonpartisan elections, 2 judges were initially appointed by a Democratic governor and 1 by a Republican governor. In event of a vacancy, the governor appoints a new judge from a list who has to be confirmed by the state senate.
US Representatives & Senators
Senate seat (D) is up in 2024, (R) in 2026. House seat (R) is up even years. Montana was apportioned a second seat in the US House after the 2020 census.
Redistricting Method/Info
Congressional and state legislative district lines are drawn by a non-politician commission of 5 members. Majority and minority leaders of both chambers of the state legislature each select one member and these 4 members select a 5th to be chair. There is 1 congressional district (2 after redistricting), 50 state senate districts and 100 state house districts.
