State Legislature
REPUBLICAN TRIFECTA There are 94 seats in the House (85% R) and 47 seats in the Senate (85% R). Both House and Senate members serve 2-year terms with no term limits. Elections occur in even years with 1/2 of the House and Senate seats up every 2 years.
State Legislative Term
No regular legislative session in even years. Session limited to 80 legislative days in 2 years.
State Elected Officials
The Governor (R) is elected for a 4-year term in presidential election (leap) years with no term limits. The SOS (R) and AG (R) are elected for 4-year terms in midterm elections with no term limits. The next election for SOS and AG is in 2022 and for governor, 2024.
State Supreme Court
There are 5 judges, chosen in nonpartisan elections. Candidates compete in a primary and the top two candidates advance to the general. They serve 10-year terms and must run for re-election to remain. Currently 1 judge was appointed by a Democratic governor, 3 by a Republican and one was elected. Vacancies are filled either by appointment by the governor with help from a commission or by special election, for a 2 year term after which they must run in a general election to complete their term.
US Representatives & Senators
Senate seats (R) are up in 2022 and 2024. House seat (1R) is up in even years.
Redistricting Method/Info
There is no congressional redistricting because theres only one district; state legislative district lines are drawn by the state legislature and subject to veto by the governor. There is 1 congressional, and 47 state legislative districts wherein each district elects 1 senator and 2 representatives.
