State Legislature
REPUBLICAN TRIFECTA (UNICAMERAL LEG) There are 49 seats in the Senate (65% R). Senate members serve 4-year terms, limited to 2 terms. Elections occur in even years with 1/2 of the Senate seats up every 2 years.
State Legislative Term
January 5, 2022 - March 31, 2022. Session limited to 90 legislative days in odd years and 60 in even.
State Elected Officials
The Governor (R), SOS (R) and AG (R) are elected for 4-year terms in midterm elections. The Governor is limited to 2 consecutive terms with at least one intervening term before reseeking office and the SOS and AG have no term limits. The next election is in 2022.
State Supreme Court
There are 7 judges, appointed by the governor from a list of at least 2 qualified nominees assembled by a judicial nominating commission. There are separate judicial nominating commissions for each supreme court district, as well as the chief justiceship. Each commission is made up of 9 members. Members of the Nebraska State Bar Association select 4 lawyers, and the governor appoints 4 nonlawyers. The 9th member is a supreme court justice who serves as chair of the commission and does not vote. Justices must run in a yes-no retention election during the first general election occurring after they have been on the court for 3 years. Subsequent terms last 6 years. 1 judge was initially appointed by a Democratic governor and 6 by a Republican governor. Vacancies are appointed by the governor from a list of at least 2 nominees by a judicial nominating commission.
US Representatives & Senators
Senate seats (R) are up in 2024 and 2026. House seats (3R) are up in even years.
Redistricting Method/Info
Both congressional and state legislative district lines are drawn by the state legislature. A simple majority is required to approve a redistricting plan, which is subject to veto by the governor. There are 3 congressional districts and 49 state senate districts. New congressional and state district maps were signed into law on 9/30/21.
