DEMOCRATIC TRIFECTA There are 42 seats in the State Assembly (62% D) and 21 seats in the Senate (57% D). Assembly members serve 2-year terms, limited to 6 terms and Senate members serve 4-year terms, limited to 3 terms. Elections occur in even years with all Assembly seats and 1/2 of the Senate seats up every 2 years.
State Legislative Term
No regular legislative session in even years. Session limited to 120 calendar days in 2 years.
State Elected Officials
The Governor (D), SOS (R) and AG (D) are elected for 4-year terms in midterm elections, limited to 2 terms. The next election is in 2022.
State Supreme Court
There are 7 judges, elected to 6-year terms in nonpartisan elections. They must run for re-election if they wish to remain. 6 judges were elected and one initially appointed by a Republican governor. Vacancies are appointed by the governor from a list of 3 nominees by a commission.
US Representatives & Senators
Senate seats (D) are up in 2022 and 2024. House seats (1R, 3D) are up in even years.
