State Legislature
REPUBLICAN TRIFECTA There are 70 seats in the House (89% R) and 35 seats in the Senate (91% R). Both House and Senate members serve 2-year terms limited to 4 terms. Elections occur in even years with all of the House and Senate seats up every 2 years.
State Legislative Term
January 11, 2022 - March 28, 2022. Session limited to 40 legislative days.
State Elected Officials
The Governor (R), SOS (R) and AG (R) are elected for 4-year terms in midterm elections, limited to 2 consecutive terms. The next election is in 2022.
State Supreme Court
There are 5 judges, appointed by the governor from a list of at least 2 names provided by a qualifications commission. The commission is made up of 7 members: 2 judges (selected by the Judicial Conference), 3 lawyers (selected by the state bar association) and 2 members of the public (selected by the governor). New judges serve for at least 3 years after which they must run in a yes-no retention election for subsequent terms of 8 years. All 5 judges were appointed by Republicans. Vacancies are filled as the seat normally would be.
US Representatives & Senators
Senate seats (R) are up in 2022 and 2026. House seat (1R) is up in even years.
Redistricting Method/Info
There is no congressional redistricting because theres only one district; state legislative district lines are drawn by the state legislature and subject to veto by the governor. There is 1 congressional, and 35 state legislative districts wherein each district elects 1 senator and 2 representatives.
